WASHINGTON – Viet X. Luong wanted to join an elite South Vietnamese military unit when he was just a young lad.

This dream never happened, but he did become a Soldier in the US Army and now a brigadier general, the first U.S. general officer of Vietnamese liniage.

Long before joining the Army, his life took some twists and turns to say the least.

In 1968, the NVA and Viet Cong launched the Tet Offensive, striking cities and villages throughout South Vietnam, including the capital city of Saigon, where Luong was raised.
